I remember trying West years ago and found it good but pedestrian. However I've heard some brighter things about it lately and just might have to give it another shot when I'm back in Vancouver (although Vij's is right around the corner and SO GOOD). Of course, having come into the possession of the cookbook, it looks like I'll have to try to replicate some of your experience in Toronto. ;) (Hee hee, thank you!)

I'm looking at that salmon dish, but seriously, can we get good sockeye (or any) in the city?? I'd rather not waste my efforts on orange farmed Atlantic crap then be disappointed because the fish tastes like rancid oil. (Yes, I'm as much a salmon snob as I am a beef snob - I grew up out west!) Perhaps that can be a "where to find" item? The difficult part is to find one that's preferably affordable especially now that it's threatened.

Why can't both cities be great at the same time?

I haven't been to West but the book makes me want to go soon.
