Taking my first real vacation in many years. Going home to Nova Scotia to eat, see family and friends, eat, hang out at the beach and maybe do a little bit of eating. Back on September 2nd!

Jam-a-Lama
I haven’t bought jam in years. I’m one of those crazy people who actually makes their own, despite it not actually being any cheaper than buying it from the store. However, back during my organic phase [1], I did buy a lot of organic jam, and the main brand I turned to was Crofter’s. So [...]
Food For Thought – Friday, August 21st
Here’s some food for thought for today… Who decides what goes on the menu? The sticky area of ethics when it comes to creating a meal. The White House has a garden… is the next step a farmers’ market? Obama muses on setting up a produce stand on the lawn. Food safety and security is [...]
Food For Thought – Thursday, August 20th
Here’s some food for thought for today… I used to live across the street from a school, and every day at 3:15pm, would have to run around and close all my windows because an ice cream truck used to park out front, motor running, and wait for the kids to get out. But I put [...]
Food For Thought – Wednesday, August 19th
Here’s some food for thought for today… Antioxidants – officially jumping the shark. A new study shows that high carb junk foods like popcorn and whole grain cereals contain significant amounts of polyphenols – the same wunder-chemicals found in chocolate, wine and tea. Shall we start a pool for the first marketing campaign for cereals [...]
It's All About Who You Know
It would seem that Toronto’s underground dining scene really did fizzle after its 15 minutes of fame. A few months back, Charlie’s Burgers was the name on everyone’s lips as Chowhounders and other “foodies” (note – derisive use of terminology) fought to have their applications accepted for the right to pay $150 and upwards per [...]
Food For Thought – Tuesday, August 18th
Here’s some food for thought for today… A clearer look at the point of view behind the recent Omnivore’s Delusion piece. It’s easy to diss sustainability when the government is subsidizing your business. Life is not so sweet for date farmers in Iraq and lack of support means that all farmers in that country are [...]
Food For Thought – Monday, August 17th
Here’s some food for thought for today… I think I need to go to Pittsburgh – just to see the place where all the salads are topped with fries. It sounds so… magical. They don’t eat a lot of chocolate in hot countries like India, which could change now that a Swiss chocolatier has developed [...]
The Savvy Shopper – Certified Angus Beef
The commercials make it look so beautiful, the steak on the grill, flames licking around the edges – you can almost taste it. “Certified Angus Beef…” Wow, that must be really great – after all, it’s certified, right? Marketing wonks have successfully turned Angus beef into a high-end product, simply by describing it (over and [...]
Food For Thought – Friday, August 14th
Today’s food for thought was actually written late yesterday, since I’m off in Niagara touring brewpubs and wineries today. Hopefully this will all still be timely when you see it. Listen very carefully and you can almost hear Homer Simpson screaming – The US is on the verge of running out of sugar unless the [...]
