Here’s some food for thought for today…
- Oh noes, El Bulli is closing for two years, whatever shall we do? Well, 1. get a life, 2. feel relieved that you’re not going to have to beg, plead and badger for a reservation anymore, 3. eat somewhere else, 4. conclude that the whole molecular thing might just be passé.
- Poison, poison, ah… tasty toad. Apparently the non-poison bits of the cane toad are kinda yummy. Or at least edible. Australians hope it catches on so they can import their problem to someone willing to dispose of the poisonous toad for them, maybe battered and deep-fried as well.
- “…a dismantling of the marine ecosystem, piece by piece”. How much do you really like shrimp?
- When the moon hits your eye… Pizza is the world’s most popular food.
- Will terrorists target the US food supply? There’s been speculation on this since the World Trade Centre attacks, and the short answer is that I wonder why it hasn’t already happened. Of course, I also sometimes wonder why Al Qaeda hasn’t shown up at the Mall of America with machine guns, so what do I know about being a terrorist?
- Holy crap, the “full English breakfast” is not even English. Like the misused term “high tea”, it’s just a pretentious name for a fry-up.
- Big food gets bigger, all processed food begins to taste the same. Which should make contaminating the food supply even easier for those terrorists, shouldn’t it?
- Searing steak – it doesn’t do what you think it does (there is no “locking in” of juices), but it does keep the meat from becoming grey and unappetizing.
- Anyone with an allergy can tell you that skin scratch tests are not 100% accurate, but if it’s something new, the testing bit to find out what you’re really allergic to can be overwhelming.
- Do you know what constitutes a serving? Most people don’t.
